What Is Autism?

Autism affects entire families, not just the person diagnosed with Autism.  There is not a single known cause of autism, though there are many theories; nor is there is a cure, but autism is treatable. Autism is not something children outgrow, but rather if the diagnosis is early in childhood, intervention can significantly improve the outcome. With the right services and supports, people with autism can live full, healthy and meaningful lives.

Understanding Autism is key in family and social situations.  A child’s autism diagnosis affects every member of the family in different ways.  Parents and other family members must now place their primary focus on helping their child with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder)  which definitely puts extra stress on relationships within the family and the community.  When the family is engaged on a whole in the treatment of the autistic child, there can be much less stress in the long run.  If the care-giving is left up to one parent only, the rest of the family will feel “left out”; on the outside looking in.  This is especially true of younger siblings.  The autistic child demands so much time, energy, and of course financial resources that the strain on a marriage can become intolerable.  For this reason, it is extremely important to involve the family as a whole in the ongoing treatment of your autistic child.   Parents now have to shift much of their resources of time and money towards providing treatment and interventions for their child, to the exclusion of other priorities. The needs of a child with ASD complicates the family, home, and social structure.   Education is the key to keeping your autistic child on course with therapy and treatment as well as helping the rest of the family including the extended family understand the special needs.

Take the time to become Aware of Autism and find out what you can do to help.
